Bastogne – a major symbol of the American and allied reaction, resistance, and ultimate rejection of the German push through Belgium – is spoken of in hushed tones by anyone who knows the story.
The Bastogne War Museum – and the Mardasson Memorial stand in honored memory to recount the intricacies of the Battle of the Bulge, symbolized, at least in part by General Anthony McAuliffe's famous reply of "NUTS!" to the German calls for the surrender of the 101st at Bastogne.
The 101st HELD Bastone on the southern shoulder on December 26th . . . just as the 75th had HELD LaRoumiere Hill on the northern shoulder the day before . . . on Christmas Day.
