During WWII, La Roumiere was a key hill on the northern shoulder of the Belgian Bulge. Key because the 400 men of Task Force Hogan were trapped in the Bulge some 20 km to the south. Their only route of escape was over La Roumiere, which was held by German Panzers and Volksgrenadier units. It took the 75th three attacks to take the hill - one on Christmas Eve and two more on Christmas Day. The 75th took the hill, but the cost was high.
