The White Cliffs of Dover in the United Kingdom is the region of English coastline that faces the Strait of Dover and France. The cliff face, that reaches 350 feet owes its white appearance to a composition of chalk, accented by streaks of black flint.
As the first sign of safety for so many American and British pilots lucky enough to return from their missions, Dover was the symbol of home.
While not an American song about an American landmark, this sentimental song of wartime hope by Dame Vera Lynn became deeply embedded in the wartime consciousness of most Americans, pilots or not.
